Article 1: Entering Headline, Dateline, & Story Copy

This article will cover the basics for entering text into your story.

Step 1: Click the "New story" shortcut on the home screen. Alternatively, selecting the "stories" section from the nav menu will take you to the stories list page. Here you can click the "+ new story" button to enter the same screen.

Step 2: Click in the Headline field near the top.

Step 3: Upon entering a Headline, Page Title, URL, and Dateline fields will be displayed. Enter text into the Headline field.

NOTE: You'll notice that both the Page Title and URL fields are automatically populated based on the Headline. Here are the rules for how the fields are related to each other before the story is saved or published:

  1. Headline:
    • Editing the Headline will automatically update the Page Title and URL to match the Headline.
    • Once you start editing the Page Title or the URL, edits to the Headline will no longer update the Page Title or URL.
  2. Page Title:
    • Initially, the Page Title will automatically be updated when the Headline is updated.
    • Once you start editing the Page Title, edits to the Headline will no longer automatically update the Page Title or URL.
      • Edits to the Page Title will begin to automatically update the URL.
    • Once you start editing the URL, edits to the Page Title will no longer automatically update the URL.
    • If the Page Title is left blank, the web page will use the Headline as the Page Title (see below for Page Title details).
  3. URL:
    • Initially, the URL will automatically be updated when the Headline is updated.
      • Once you start editing the Page Title, the URL will automatically be updated when the Page Title is updated.
    • Once you start editing the URL, edits to the Headline or the Page Title will no longer automatically update any fields.

Once a story is saved, all the fields can be manually updated individually.

Once a story is published, all the fields can be manually updated individually except the URL field. To better support SEO, the Headline and the Page Title are not linked after a story is published to allow editing and customization of the Page Title. Additional information can be added to the Page Title to help promote more search results for the page. If you want to ensure that the Headline and the Page Title are the same, you can leave the Page Title blank OR if you change the Headline, you have to make sure you change the Page Title before publishing the article.

NOTE: The value entered into these field service different purposes:

  1. Headline
    • The value of the Headline field appears in the article details and search results within the station's website.
    • Within StoryLine, the Headline appears on the story's card within the Stories screen.
  2. Page Title
    • Shown in the browser toolbar.
    • Provides a title for the page when it is added to favorites.
    • Shown as the title for the page for search engine optimization (SEO).
  3. URL
    • This is the URL of the news story when it is published.
  4. Canonical URL Override
    • The canonical URL is used for SEO and helps identify the original source of content. The canonical URL is embedded within the metadata of the HTML file.
    • The canonical URL for the story will default to the URL of the story. If you wish to change it, you can do so by clicking into that field and making your desired changes.
    • When a story is syndicated, the canonical URL (URL or Override) for the original story will be found within the syndicated stories regardless of which site they are found.

Step 4: Enter text in the "Dateline" field

Step 5: Either manually type or paste text from your clipboard into the white story copy area.

NOTE: Once the copy area is selected the expanded URL, Page Title, and Dateline fields collapse automatically. To access this area again simply click in the grey area above.

NOTE: If you are pasting text in from an editor, some formatting may be stripped. You may also need to manually enter punctuation marks like apostrophes and quotation marks. StoryLine will render non-native punctuation as code when published and will need to be corrected.
