Article 7: Clip Live Video and Add to Program Guide

In this article, we will show you how to create a specific sized VOD video from a live stream video and add it to the Program Guide.

There are two types of clips:

  • Instant clip:  The entire broadcast video becomes a clipped VOD asset.
  • Trimmed clip: A trimmed start-end time creates a custom time sliced VOD asset.

In this article, we will show how to fill a 15-minute time-slot by clipping a 15-minute clip and adding it to the guide.  (FYI: Clips can be created from videos or broadcasts.) In this example, we will be clipping it from a broadcast.

Note: Live broadcasts can be clipped immediately after they start streaming.

IMPORTANT: To ensure that your live video is sliced in one contiguous broadcast, reset the encoder before every match or major live broadcast event.  (There is an internal constraint where the encoder automatically restarts every 8 hours.) A reset can be performed by toggling the “Override Capture”.  Please see Article 2: Basic stream controls for more details.

Step 1: Getting Familiar with the Clipping screen.

CLIPPING INSTRUCTIONS

Key Terms :

Video Player Controller  is a grey bar immediately at the bottom of the video that tells the time elapsed through the entire video.

Double-arrows  on either end of a grey bar -- used to zoom in or out of the frame size by dragging the arrow.  This changes the size of the grey bar.

Grabber  double-dotted line in the middle of a grey bar with double arrows on either end - used to zoom in or out of the frame size.

Clip points  are identified as red circles at the ends of the red line.

In-Point  is the clip point (red circle) on the left indicating the start time.

Out-Point  is the clip point (red circle) on the right indicating the end time.

Current Time-Point  is identified by a tiny white circle traveling along the Clip points red line. As the player plays the video, the Current Time  is also updated in the lower left corner.

Trim Start Time  jump to a specific time to start the clip.

Trim End Time  jump to a specific time to end the clip.

Step 2: While on the Program Guides, we observe a 15 minute (900 second) gap in the schedule between 2 episodes.

Step 3: To create a 15-minute clip, first go to the Media Library by clicking on "media" on the nav.

The media library stores all of the assets for StoryLine.

Step 4: Click on the "broadcast" filter and see a dropdown appear. In this case, we are selecting the "Tennis 1" stream.

Broadcasts are available in StoryLine for 2 weeks.  A VOD must be clipped from the broadcast to permanently store the asset in StoryLine.

Step 5: Observe the duration times on the card. In this example, we are selecting the broadcast with an 18 minute duration.

These broadcasts are available for clipping almost immediately when they start streaming so you can clip a broadcast as it is still being streamed.

Step 6: Once selected, begin playing the video and set the "Trim Start Time" and "Trim Stop Time".

CLIPPING INSTRUCTIONS

Trimming the clip, Method One:

  • Drag the In-Point  and the Out-Point to set the clip start and stop time.
  • Rename the clip.
  • Click the "clip" button.
  • Notice that the start/stop (⑥/⑦) segments will be broken out into 13 decimal second segments. However, the Current Time  is only a 4 decimal second segment. (This is an HTTP Live Streaming limitation.) You will need to have the clip points be 4 decimal seconds as well.  You do this when you trim the clip.

Trimming the clip, Method Two:

  • Allow the Current Time-Point to run to a specific start time, and click the Current Time pause to stop it there.
    • Alternatively, use the Video Player Controller to set the Current Time-Point  for the start of the clip.
    • Note the "jump to," whether you click Trim Start Time or Trim End Time, will always jump to the Current Time-Point.
  • Click the "jump to" for Trim Start Time  to have the player's current start time jump to this clip point. The time displayed in the trim start time text box will be set to the 4 decimal second current time.
  • Click the Current Time arrow to start the video and let it run to the desired end, and then click pause again.
  • Click the "jump to" for the Trim End Time to a specific end time.
  • Rename the clip.
  • Click the "clip" button.

Using the Hot Keys feature:

  • The "I" key is a hotkey for the trim arrow in the start time text box. (This sets the In-Point.)
  • The "O" key is a hotkey for the trim arrow in the stop time text box. (This sets the Out-Point.)
  • The "spacebar" can be used to start or stop the clip.
  • The "C" key is a hotkey for creating the clip.

Using the frame feature:

  • Drag the left double arrow  inward and the right double arrow inward to zoom in.
  • Use the grabber  to then traverse the clipping area.

Step 7: Replace the default clip name with a meaningful name and click the "clip" button.

The name that you give the clip will be used for finding it in the Media Library.

Once you click on the "clip" button, it will begin processing.  You do not need to wait on this screen for the clip to finish processing.  It will show in the Media Library when it is done.

Step 8: Press the "done" button to exit back to the Media Library.

Step 9: In the Media Library the clip will now be available in the video library.

Step 10: Click on program guides on the nav to return to the guide. Click to select the time-slot and see the "+" icon.

See the Article 2: Add to Schedule (video, live stream, or episode) for details on how to add a program to the guide.

Step 11: When you click "+", you are sent to the Add to schedule screen where you select the video "clip".

Step 12: If the new clip you are inserting is too long, you will receive a warning error message.

Step 13: Click "yes" and the system adds this newly clipped video program to the schedule.

For more information on how to create an episode from this video clip, see Chapter 20, Article 4: Add or Manage Episodes on a Show Package.
